103,650 Signatures for Campaign for Mental Health Education
Earlier in the year I was delighted to have an article published with The Counsellors Café about my campaign to have mental health education added to the curriculum for all schools in the UK. Since then the response has been incredible and the petition has reached 103,650 signatures at the time of writing.
I visited Number 10 earlier this month to officially hand in the signatures so far and request that making Mental Health Education mandatory teaching in all UK schools be debated in Parliament. This was an incredibly humbling experience and something I’m incredibly proud to be a part of.
Since starting this petition, it has received support from politicians across the political spectrum, has been shared over 11,000 times and the Department of Education have released initial outlines on how to make this a reality. This would not be the first time Mental Health Education has been considered for parliamentary debate, but this time, the reforms are already in reach. This is our chance to make sure they definitely go through and are extensive enough to improve the lives of our nation’s children.
Thank you to all of you who have signed, shared and talked about this petition. Together we have shown that mental health is a growing concern and the lack of education around it must be addressed now. By teaching children that mental illness can be talked about freely and without judgement, they will be more understanding of others and themselves. This will break down stigma, empower them to speak up when they need help and be better understood when doing so.
We have already proved how strength in numbers can ignite change, but keep sharing to help this cause go all the way. Together we can improve childhoods and save lives.
